I
heard about the Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling homeschooling early in
my career. My
daughter is in kindergarten and some moms in my homeschool group with Charlotte
Mason method. I
prefer to use a standard program, however, because I'm new, nervous, and afraid
to ruin the life of my child!
However, about a year later, we moved to another city. And as luck would have it, our house is stored in a local primary school. One day, when my daughter was sitting at the kitchen table to study, I look at the school, and suddenly I had a thought - exactly why I homeschool? I know that having a home is much better than having to school for various reasons, but this point of view, I decided I wanted to do more than just school at home - I want to give something more. Something that even the best can not be in school, something that is only good at home, I can give you - and so I began to look at other forms of homeschooling, not only the use of personal or inspirational Christian program at home.
Charlotte Mason method is exactly what I was looking for - use living books instead of text books, help children to learn knowledge about the subject, not just memorize facts, and most importantly - it works in the development of the whole child - spiritually, intellectually, creatively , and physically. I immediately knew that Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling would be perfect for us.
What Charlotte Mason Method?
The first thing you should do is familiarize yourself with the Charlotte Mason method. There are many books that can help you, but the original series by Charlotte Mason Homeschooling is the best, even if the read length (six volumes). You can also buy a shorter version or the notes of the series if you want to read a quick version of his philosophy.
Basically, Charlotte was a British educator who believed that education should be about the facts is more than just memorizing exams, training for a job, or get into a good college. Charlotte Mason believed that education is a discipline and a way of life. The purpose of education is to know who we are and how we enter the world of humans and the universe God created.
Charlotte Mason believes (and I agree) that children are able to deal with ideas and knowledge. Children are not just blank slates or empty bag to fill with information that has been filtered through a Charlotte Mason education includes a first contact with great ideas and noble life through books, not text (teacher or writer.) Books in each school subject , and through art, music and poetry.
However, the Charlotte Mason method is very carefully planned where books are selected for the values and ideas, and the child was given a directed reading and learning every day in some areas. Children are expected to not only read books, but to be able to talk about what they see as a sign of understanding. Young children occurred storytelling, while the older children write their stories. (Such a difference in teaching methods in place to check whether or not the child can repeat information through memorization, but the spirit is not given, whether or not they really understand the information!)
